Samsung Gear Sport preview: Our initial impressions

Last updated: October 24th, 2017 at 12:36 UTC+01:00

The Gear Sport is at the SamMobile office, and while we're working on the full review, nosotros felt like sharing a few thoughts about the sentry in this brusque preview. For those unaware, Samsung announced the Gear Sport at the IFA as a small-scale upgrade to the Gear S3. The Gear Sport is smaller (something a lot of consumers had asked for) and its highlight characteristic is its ability to withstand water at up to 50 meters of depth.

Our Gear Sport arrived last Friday, and I was surprised to see that Samsung has sent us the blue version. We normally receive blackness review units, which tin lead to monotony and also get in harder for united states to take great pictures. The first thing I noticed subsequently unboxing the lookout man was its size. The Gear Sport feels small compared to the Gear S3 Frontier I use everyday, and it too gave me mixed feelings in terms of design.

The Gear Sport has design elements from both Gear S3 variants. It has the buttons from the Frontier model and the bezel ring from the Classic Gear S3. However, the bezel ring doesn't have laser engravings, unlike the band seen on the Gear S3. A nice fiddling detail hither is that the middle charge per unit sensor juts out past around 1 mm from the rest of the trunk, which ways the sensor is closer to your skin compared to the Gear S3; this volition hopefully make for increased accuracy when detecting middle rate.

Something unexpected on the Gear Sport is the presence of a microUSB port, fifty-fifty though USB Type-C is shut to condign the new standard (I guess this isn't exactly a deal breaker, but it'south still odd to run into on a 2017 product). The Gear Sport has almost the aforementioned interface equally the previous Gear smartwatches. The icons have been upgraded to lucifer those on the Samsung Experience UX on the visitor'south 2017 phones. I'm glad the see the interface hasn't changed much, and I have to say the new sporty watch faces that come up preloaded look crawly.

I can't wait to share my final opinion on the Gear Sport, and then stay tuned for our in-depth review! Accept questions nigh the watch? Inquire away in the comments and we'll do our best to respond them!
